Ham Radio Friedrichshafen 2009

Nonostante la crisi la fiera accoglie migliaia di visitatori e quell'anno ne ho visti passare più di sempre e affollare lo stand dei telegrafisti. Non mancavano novità tra i tasti di I2RTF. Erano ben sei i nuovi tasti presentati che hanno attirato i curiosi. Lo stand era stato organizzato, come sempre, in maniera impeccabile da Vito Vetrano IN3VST. Il top dei nuovi tasti presentati era l’Intrepid, una soluzione innovativa e progettata dal maestro I2RTF. La presentazione ha entusiasmato tutti i telegrafisti amanti del vibro. Era un via vai per provare la novità, si stava spargendo la voce in Fiera. L'Intrepid aveva creato attenzione, sembrava che avessero visto un bambino appena nato. Un motivo di orgoglio la mia modifica fatta a mano, alla vite del pomello. Un radioamatore americano (Joe K2VUI) ci convinceva per una modifica alla vite con la testa sporgente. Infatti dava fastidio nell'operatività, specialmente ai mancini come lui. La sporgenza della vite che regge il pomello gli batteva contro il dito.

Despite the crisis, the fair welcomes thousands of visitors and that year I saw more than ever visitors passing and visiting the Italian Telegraphy stand. There was many news among the Begali Keys. There were six new keys presented that attract the visitors. The stand of Italian Telegraphy was organized, as always, in an impeccable way by Vito Vetrano IN3VST. The top of news keys was the Intrepid,  a semi automatic with an innovative solution, made after many year of projection by Piero Begali I2RTF. The Intrepid, a Vibro key, thrilled all the telegraphist and created a big attention and made a coming and go to try the new key, like was a newborn baby. A source of pride is my handmade modification to the knob screw. An American radio amateur (Joe  K2VUI) convinced us that the screw with the protruding head could be annoying in operation, being left-handed. The screw head holding the knob was hitting his finger.

Sono andato alla ricerca di una punta da trapano. Ho pensato che essendo la leva del tasto di alluminio, la si poteva tranquillamente passare nel buco della vite per creare la svasatura. Trovato la punta da trapano Piero è riuscito a farsela fresare in maniera da poterla usare a mano Nel frattempo sono riuscito a trovare in fiera le viti svasate; sembravano fatte apposta. Mentre Piero intratteneva i clienti, provvedevo a fare a mano l'invasatura per la vite. Rimontato il pomello la modifica era perfetta. L’americano se ne è andato contento con il tasto modificato. La modifica è stata apprezzata anche da un radioamatore lussemburghese che è riuscito ad accaparrarsi l'ultimo Intrepid che nel frattempo avevo modificato.

I went looking for a drill bit.  I thought that since the button lever is aluminum, i could easily pass it through the screw hole to create the countersink. Found the drill bit Piero managed to have it milled so that we could use it by hand. In the meantime I managed to find the countersunk screws at the fair, they seemed to be made on purpose. While Piero entertained the customers I proceeded to make the socket for the screw by hand. Reassembled the knob, the modification came perfect. The American went away happy with the modified key. The modification was also appreciated by a Luxembourg radio amateur who managed to grab the last Intrepid, that I had modified in the meantime.

La modifica in seguito è divenuta permanente. L’idea è stata mia e quindi nella progettazione di quel tasto complesso, ho contribuito con uno 0,00001 percento. Quando provavano quel tasto a tutti brillavano gli occhi. D'altronde i tasti di Piero sono veramente una meraviglia della tecnica e del genio dell' "operaio", come lo chiamo io e dietro c'è una lavorazione non indifferente. Per la cronaca, la svasatura viene ancora fatta a mano; in officina è più semplice.

The change later became permanent. The idea was mine and therefore in the design of that complex key I contributed with a 0,00001 per cent. When the Telegraphist  tried the key everyone’s eyes shone. Anyway Piero’s key is a truly marvel of the technique and genius of the “worker” as I use to call him. For the story, the countersinking is still done by hand, in the workshop is easier.
